How Important Is Proper Footwear?

Very important.
But even more important than wearing good shoes is choosing the right shoes for the right activity.

A Lesson Learned the Hard Way
Before a trip to Austria, I bought a pair of runners that I absolutely loved. They were cute, stylish, and felt fine when I tried them on. Support? Not so much—but honestly, I didn’t think much of it at the time.
Big mistake.
While sightseeing, I stepped backward to get a better photo angle, landed on a rock, and wrenched my foot badly before falling hard onto the ground. I jumped up right away, but I knew something wasn’t right. After a half hour or so my foot swelled up like a balloon, and the damage was done.

Cute shoes absolutely have their place—but when it comes to activities like hiking, sports, traveling, or long walks, proper footwear isn’t optional. It’s essential. And it may literally save you from injury.
Wearing the right shoes won’t eliminate risk entirely, but it dramatically reduces the chances of accidents like mine.
